Attack on Polish patrol in Afghanistan
On 18th August in the afternoon an attack on Polish patrol was conducted. Sapper Senior Private Szymon Sitarczuk was killed.

The attack took place in northern part of Ghazni province where soldiers from 1st company of motorised infantry of „Alfa” Combat Group were on patrol. When sappers were checking suspicious area an IED exploded. As a result of it Senior Private Szymon Sitarczuk was killed and another Polish soldier and two Afghan policemen were injured.

After the explosion Polish patrol was attacked from guns. Soldiers responded with fire immediately forcing the insurgents to withdraw. MEDEVAC helicopter was called at once. The injured soldier and Afghan policemen after receiving first medical aid were transported to hospital in Ghazni. Their life is safe.

The family of the killed soldier has been informed about the accident.


Senior Private Szymon Sitarczuk since 2004 served in 1st Sappers Brigade in Brzeg. At the beginning as a conscript soldier and from 2005 as a professional soldier on posts of sapper, driver and scout. The mission in Afghanistan was his second foreign mission. Earlier he served in 4th rotation of Polish Military Contingent in Afghanistan. He was single. He was 28 years old.
